Se lasciare un posto sicuro per una nuova sfida all’estero sembra un’impresa titanica, trovare un nuovo lavoro in un paese di cui si sa poco o nulla richiede sforzi ancora maggiori.
Ho trovato lavoro dall’Italia mettendomi in contatto con diverse agenzie di ricerca del personale. Ero talmente determinato che ho iniziato a contattarne il più possibile, finché non ho trovato l’occasione giusta. Avere un profilo LinkedIn curato, scritto in un buon inglese e con buone connessioni è stato estremamente importante per dare la giusta immagine di me alle aziende che contattavo. All’estero LinkedIn è uno strumento usato seriamente per la selezione del personale. Sicuramente non è stato facile, cercare lavoro all’estero quando già si lavora a tempo pieno è molto complicato e dispendioso. Cercavo di organizzare a Londra quanti più colloqui possibile nell’arco di pochi giorni in maniera da ottimizzare tempi e spese. Ci è voluto un po’ ma alla fine gli sforzi sono stati ripagati e sono stato assunto da Pepe Jeans – London”.
Quando ci si candida per una posizione di un certo livello uno degli aspetti fondamentali è essere in grado di affrontare conversazioni di un certo livello. Se la carriera della maggior parte degli italiani a Londra fatica a raggiungere livelli superiori a quello del lavapiatti la colpa è forse della diffusa convinzione che “la lingua si impara sul posto”. Sul posto, infatti, anche coloro che masticano l’idioma con una certa confidenza si vedono costretti ad affrontare situazioni difficili.
Quando mi sono trasferito in UK conoscevo già abbastanza bene l’inglese. Frequentare una scuola internazionale come il Polimoda mi ha permesso di migliorare la conoscenza della lingua, avendo la possibilità di chiacchierare ogni giorno con studenti che arrivavano da tutto il mondo.
Nonostante questo, l’arrivo a Londra è stato piuttosto traumatico da questo punto di vista. Il mio orecchio era abituato a un accento americano (non so quante volte ho riguardato tutte le serie di “Friends” in lingua originale!).
Il primo giorno in ufficio sono stato accolto dall’assistente del capo, originaria del nord Inghilterra, la quale ha iniziato a parlare con un accento per me incomprensibile! In quel momento ho veramente messo in dubbio la mia effettiva conoscenza della lingua! I primi tempi è stata abbastanza dura ma piano piano l’orecchio si abitua e la comprensione diventa praticamente naturale”.
È quindi necessario essere consapevoli del fatto che un buon livello linguistico è indispensabile, ma non è l’unico elemento utile, se davvero si vuole prendere il volo qualsiasi consiglio sulla nuova cultura e sul nuovo stile di vita è estremamente prezioso.
Mi sono preparato alla partenza affidandomi al passaparola e raccogliendo quante più informazioni possibile da amici e conoscenti che già avevano vissuto per un periodo in UK. L’azienda per cui avevo trovato lavoro mi aveva offerto una sistemazione in albergo per un mese, fino a quando non avrei trovato un alloggio. Inoltre i miei nuovi colleghi e un’amica italiana trasferitasi nello stesso periodo mi hanno dato preziosi consigli. Successivamente, ho trovato casa affidandomi a internet. Intuire quale fosse la zona giusta da scegliere sarebbe stato praticamente impossibile senza i preziosi consigli dei miei colleghi di lavoro! Londra è una città talmente grande e varia che è molto facile finire ad abitare in zone tutt’altro che raccomandabili, magari lasciandosi ingannare dai prezzi più convenienti. Purtroppo il fatto che questa sia una città molto cara è tutt’altro che una leggenda metropolitana! I prezzi sono esageratamente alti ed è praticamente necessario condividere un appartamento con altre persone, acquistare una proprietà rimane un sogno per molti. Inoltre molto spesso sono richieste referenze scritte, possibilmente dal datore di lavoro, a garanzia di affidabilità. Gli affitti sono alle stelle e il costo dei trasporti pubblici fa rabbrividire, proprio per questo per molti utilizzare una bici diventa una necessità. Ma è anche vero che questa è una città che offre moltissime attività gratuite, infatti non è necessario spendere £15 d’ingresso ad un club per divertirsi! Vale la pena menzionare inoltre che i musei qui sono gratis! Alcuni dei più bei musei al mondo sono accessibili a chiunque senza dover spendere un centesimo.

If leaving a safe place for a new challenge abroad seems an enormous task, finding a new job in a country we know very little or nothing about requires even greater efforts.
I got a job from Italy getting in touch with various recruitment agencies. I was so determined I started to contact as many as possible, until I found the right opportunity. Having a well-finished LinkedIn profile, written in good English and with good connections was extremely important to give companies a good impression about me. In other countries, LinkedIn is used seriously for the selection of personnel. It wasn’t easy, for sure. looking for a job abroad when already working full-time is very complicated and expensive, too. I was trying to arrange as many interviews as possible in London within just a few days in order to optimize time and costs. It took a little while, but eventually my efforts were paid off and I was hired by Pepe Jeans – London.
When applying for a position of a certain level, one of the key points is to be able to face conversations of a certain level. If most Italians in London struggle to reach levels above dishwashing, this is perhaps due to the widespread belief that “a foreign language is learnt on the spot” – and even those who are already quite familiar with the language are forced to deal with some difficult situations.
When I moved to the UK I already knew English enough. Attending an international school such as Polimoda allowed me to improve my language skills, and gave me a chance to chat with students from all over the world every single day.
Despite this, my arrival in London was quite a shock from this point of view, because my ears had always been used to an American accent (I don’t know how many times I’ve been watching the complete series of “Friends” in the original language!).
The first day at the office I was greeted by the chief assistant, who came from northern England, who started talking to me with an accent I couldn’t understand a word of! That’s when I really started questioning my actual knowledge of English! At first it was pretty hard but then, little by little, your ears get used to it, and understanding becomes almost natural. “
It is therefore necessary to be aware that a good linguistic level is essential, but not the only useful element – if you really want to spread your wings any advice on the new culture and new lifestyle is extremely valuable.
I prepared for departure relying on word of mouth and gathering as many pieces of information as possible from friends and acquaintances who had already lived for some time in the UK. The company I was about to start working for had offered me a hotel accommodation for a month, until I found a place of my own. Also, my new colleagues and an Italian friend who were moving in around the same period definitely gave me some valuable advice. Then, I found a flat on the internet. Choosing the right area would have been basically impossible without the precious advice of my colleagues! London’s so huge and diverse that it’s very easy to end up living in dodgy areas, often being fooled by cheaper prices. Unfortunately, the fact that this is a very expensive town is anything but an urban legend! Prices are outrageously high and you pretty much have to share a flat with other people – for many, buying a property is just a dream. Furthermore, written references are required, possibly by your employer, in order to guarantee reliability. Rents are soaring and the cost of public transports gives you shivers down your spine, and that’s why many people use bikes as a lifeline. On the other hand, this is a city that offers lots of free activities, no need to spend £15 to get into a club to have fun! It’s also worth mentioning that museums are free here! Some of the finest museums in the world are accessible to anyone without spending a penny.
