Ovvero, «per le loro scoperte sul traffico delle vescicole, uno dei principali sistemi di trasporto nelle cellule» (Grazie ai loro studi è stato possibile scoprire come ogni cellula organizza il suo sistema di trasporto. Ogni cellula produce ed esporta molecole, e per farlo necessita di un sistema per spostarle).
Il Premio Nobel per la fisiologia o la medicina è stato previsto nel testamento di Alfred Nobel del 1895 ed è stato assegnato per la prima volta nel 1901 (come gli altri premi previsti da Nobel stesso).
Questo premio non viene assegnato dalla Accademia Reale Svedese delle Scienze (come avviene per la maggior parte dei Premi Nobel), bensì è assegnato dal Karolinska Institutet, una università medica svedese che ha sede nella città di Solna, a pochi chilometri da Stoccolma, fondata nel 1810.
